Organic Gardening on the Patio

Expert AuthorYou want to do some Organic Gardening, but you live in the middle of Chicago. Or you live in an apartment. Or you live in a rental and your landlord does not permit gardening. What can you do?

You can do Organic Gardening on the patio - balcony - deck - porch. Organic Gardening does not require large amounts of space. You can grow fresh fruits and vegetables in containers, and keep them on the patio.

Organic Gardening on the patio differs somewhat from Organic Gardening in a plot of ground. The following Organic Gardening helpful ideas should help you.

Organic Gardening Helpful Ideas

1. Seeds: Choose organic seeds just as you would for in-ground Organic Gardening. You can grow most vegetables on the patio, and some fruits as well. For more information on Organic Gardening of fruits on a patio, refer to our article entitled Organic Fruit Gardening Geometrically.

2. Containers: Once you have chosen seed for your Organic Gardening project, determine the depth and width of the containers you will need. Containers need not be fancy or expensive. They can be anything that will hold damp soil and a growing plant. Your container should have good drainage, too. If it does not, drill a few holes in the bottom. Put approximately 1 inch of gravel, small stones, or other drainage material in the bottom of each container.

3. Soil: You will soon learn in Organic Gardening that healthy soil is the secret to healthy plants. Fill your containers with healthy organic soil. Use soil that will hold water right to the tips of the plants roots without letting those root tips get too wet. If in doubt as to what type of soil will do this, ask your local nursery or farming supplies store.

4. Fertilizers: Organic Gardening depends on using only organic products. Good organic composting is the best way to get fertilizer for Organic Gardening.

5. Pesticides: Yes, your Organic Gardening efforts will attract pests. Again, rely on organic products to fight them. Buy a few ladybirds to live on the plants in your patio containers. Make a simple trap for Japanese beetles. Fill a few small containers with marigolds. Organic Gardening in containers will rarely have to contend with cutworms, and other pests are much easier to fight when you’re working on your patio.

Organic Gardening on the patio will allow you to grow plants easily, and you will soon have healthy organic produce to enjoy.
