Home Organic Gardening Pesticides - Part 2
Home Organic Gardening pesticides available commercially are growing in number. With increasing interest in Organic Gardening, the gardener who was once accustomed to purchasing a gallon of this or that synthetic or chemical pesticide may now turn to Organic Gardening pesticides instead.
Home Organic Gardening pesticides have the advantage of being less costly, allowing the organic gardener to save money on Organic Pest Control.
Part 1 of this article discussed recipes for Organic Gardening pesticides, and gave tests for such recipes.
Home Organic Gardening Pesticides - Part 1 also gave directions for 2 such recipes. We now move on to 3 additional recipes for Organic Gardening pesticides.
Recipes for Organic Gardening Pesticides #3 - Homemade Japanese Beetle Trap
Japanese Beetles can be “hand picked” when there are not too many. Do your picking in the morning when dewy wings will hinder their escape. Spread a sheet under plants where beetles hide, and shake the plants. Lift the sheets, and dump the “picked” beetles into a bucket of soapy water.
When Japanese beetles are at their worst, use a Japanese Beetle trap. This Organic Gardening pesticide needs just 4 ingredients:
* 1 cup of water
* 1 ripe banana, peach, or other fruit
* 1.25 cups of sugar
* 1 package of dry yeast
Place all ingredients in a blender and liquefy. Pour the solution into a gallon-size plastic jug. Leave the cap off to provide an entrance to your trap. Place the jug at least 2 inches off the ground, in a sunny spot at the edge of your garden. Japanese beetles will enter to get the “brew” you created, and will be unable to get out. Each evening, strain out the collected beetles and return the trap to its location.
This Organic Gardening pesticide will not need to be stored, as its fermentation is the desirable factor.
Recipes for Organic Gardening Pesticides #4 - Homemade Japanese Bug Juice
Among other recipes for Organic Gardening pesticides that control Japanese Beetles, when not at their worst, is this homemade bug juice. You will need an old blender that is not used for human food - and you will NOT want to make this in your kitchen. You need only 2 ingredients:
* 1 cup of “hand picked” Japanese Beetles (see above method)
* Water
Place the beetles in an old blender, add a little water, and liquefy. Add enough water to thin the concoction enough to pass through a sprayer. Pour into a spray bottle, and apply to upper and lower sides of leaves on plants that are infested. This Organic Gardening pesticide should not be stored, as fresh, dead beetles comprise its effectiveness.
Recipes for Organic Gardening Pesticides #4 - Contact Insecticide
When making organic pesticides, it is important to have one for those insects that are classified as eating, chewing, sucking insects. This contact insecticide is quick and easy, and requires just 2 ingredients:
* 2 habanero peppers
* 1.5 cups of water
Habanero chili peppers are among the most intensely “hot” peppers. They are round and usually orange-red. It takes little imagination to understand why they make pests depart when they ingest them.
Blend the habanero peppers with the water until entirely liquefied. Strain out any small pieces of pepper that remain. Measure your insecticide concentrate, and add enough room temperature water to make 1 gallon.
Pour into a spray bottle. This Organic Gardening pesticide can be stored by freezing in 1/4 cup portions. Thaw and use.
Contact insecticides are good organic pesticides for pests such as borers, caterpillars, leaf eating beetles, grasshoppers, grubs, and weevils.
