Organic Salad Garden

Expert AuthorExercise, health, safety, taste - these four things and more are reasons that many people decide to take up Organic Gardening. Organic salad gardens can be especially rewarding.

Reasons for an Organic Salad Garden

An organic salad garden can give you a fresh, crisp salad, free of synthetic pesticides and insecticides. That is the aim with all Organic Gardening, of course. Our growing concern with conventionally grown salad vegetables is that they may contain insecticide residue that cannot be removed with washing.

Organic salad gardens, however, should contain no such residues. Growing an organic salad garden gives you fresh-from-the-garden salad greens without the fear of chemical contaminants.

Creating an Organic Salad Garden

Starting an organic salad garden is much like beginning any Organic Gardening project. A few basic steps will assure best results.

1. Decide on a location. Select an area that has not had chemical fertilizers or other treatment. Your organic salad garden should be in an area with good drainage and sufficient sunlight.

2. Remove all sod or grass from the area. If you are unsure of how to do this, see “How to Kill Grass for a Garden Organic” on this website.

3. Dig up and loosen the soil in your organic salad garden to a depth of 8 to 12 inches.

4. Order organic seeds from a reputable source such as Main Street. Read our review of this organic seed company by clicking here. Get a good variety so that your salads will be interesting.

5. At least 3 weeks before planting, work an organic fertilizer into the soil of your organic salad garden.

6. Plant organic seeds according to package directions. Water them after planting.

7. Spread a little compost and light mulch around your seeds to keep weeds at bay.

Benefits of Organic Salad Gardens

Organic salad gardens will make it easier to eat the fresh, leafy vegetables you need in your diet. Fresh lettuce in green and red with crisp cucumbers and radishes are only the beginning. Knowing that the nutrients are not compromised with chemical contaminants will make your salads taste even better.

Besides safety from contaminants, and the delicious taste, you will gain more health from your organic salad garden’s produce.

Finally, an organic salad garden will give you plenty of reason to exercise, draw vitamin D from the sunlight, and breathe deeply.
